 PycnogenolPycnogenol is the branded name for an extract sourced from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. Pine bark extract is regarded as a powerful antioxidant, containing highly concentrated amounts of bioflavonoids and active compounds.

A bill to levy tougher regulations on the U.S. cosmetics industry was introduced to Congress in late July. The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 (H.R. 5786) calls for a list of ingredients prohibited from use in cosmetics, new recall authority for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), randomized postmarket cosmetics testing, and new registration fees for companies, among other measures, according to Representative Jan Schakowski (D-IL), who introduced the bill together with Ed Markey (D-MA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI).

In July, Cargill (Schiedam, Netherlands) announced a supply deal to provide Unilever’s European operations with 10,000 metric tons of sustainable palm oil certified by Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

While sales of natural and organic cosmetics declined in conventional retail outlets last year (down 10%), combined sales of these products fared better in the natural retail sector (up 3.5%), according to market researcher SPINS.
