Gadot Biochemical Industries (GBI; Haifa Bay, Israel) introduced a new mineral blend combining magnesium and calcium. The synergy between these two minerals will benefit target health conditions, specifically bone health, the company says.
Ohad Cohen, GBI’s CEO, explained in a press release how science supports pairing magnesium and calcium. “Without magnesium, calcium supplements can cause a negative effect of vascular calcification, depositing itself on the aortic wall, kidneys, arteries, and cartilage rather than in bones where it has the greatest benefit. Balancing calcium with the right amount of magnesium is good for potentially mitigating those harmful issues.”
The new blend is called Cal2Mag and combines the minerals in a ratio the firm says has been shown to support bone health. Each gram of Cal2Mag contains 100 mg calcium citrate and 50 mg magnesium citrate, providing 10% of the Daily Value of calcium and 14% of the Daily Value of magnesium.
For enhanced bioavailability, Cal2Mag contains the citrate forms of these minerals, with the company noting, “Citrates are preferred as they are absorbed independent of food consumption, have a high mineral concentration, neutral flavor, low interference with other minerals, and are highly compatible with other nutrients.”
Cal2Mag is made using what the company calls a “unique granulation process with added binder” that helps prevent powder segregation, eliminate dust particles, and improve flow and compactibility.
Cracking the code: Advancements in calcium absorption and nutritional understanding
July 23rd 2024Recent research conducted by ILSI U.S. and Canada – a global, nonprofit federation dedicated to advancing precompetitive research in the food, nutrition and health realms – and partially funded by Balchem, has shed light on how to improve predictions of Ca bioavailability across different food matrices.
