
Human-Identical Lactoferrin: Inside Helaina’s Effera Innovation

At the Future Nutra Innovation Summit in Lake Conroe, Texas, Nutritional Outlook spoke with Dr. Cassie Evans of Helaina to talk about effera, the company's human-identical lactoferrin produced through precision fermentation. In this video interview, Evans breaks down what "human-identical" really means at the molecular level—and why that distinction matters for formulators and consumers alike.
Evans explains that effera's amino acid sequence is a 100% match to native human lactoferrin, right down to matching glycosylation sites, secondary structure, and thermal stability, details that set it apart from bovine-derived lactoferrin, even those made using precision fermentation. As she notes, technology alone doesn't change the source material: fermented bovine lactoferrin is still bovine lactoferrin.
The conversation also covers how precision fermentation works in practice, from the fermentation process itself through purification into the final dried powder, and the extensive characterization and safety testing behind the ingredient. Evans highlights a notable finding: in testing, the body showed no immune response to effera lactoferrin, evidence, she says, that the body recognizes effera as its own.
With safety established, Evans shares that Helaina is now shifting focus toward efficacy and human clinical trial design, the next frontier for the ingredient.

Nico Saraceno: Ladies and gentlemen, we are live from FNIS in Lake Conroe, Texas, Margaritaville. I am Nico Saracino, senior editor of Nutritional Outlook magazine. I am joined today by Cassie Evans. She is, Dr. Cassie Evans, rather, of Helaina. Thank you so much for taking the time today. I really appreciate it.
Cassie Evans: Awesome. Thank you so much for having me. Excited to talk about Helaina and also be here at Margaritaville with some of the best in the industry.
Saraceno: Yeah, quite a venue here, and like you said, some of the best KOLs here on site. I mean, this is only the first day, and we've already had quite a few presentations.
Evans: Yes.
Saraceno: I know you're slated to present later on this week, which we'll get into it, but I want to talk about effera first. So it's described as the world's first human-identical lactoferrin, which is made via precision fermentation. Could you just explain what this human-identical term means for people at the molecular level, and like, how does precision fermentation, how does it get you there in a way that maybe other production methods can't? Like could you maybe describe its like effectiveness with that?
Evans: Absolutely. I think the one exciting part about this is that it's not another marketing gimmick. This is actually what sets our lactoferrin apart from everything else that's currently available on the market. So when we say that it's human-identical, our amino acid sequence matches 100% to the amino acid sequence of the native lactoferrin, and it doesn't stop there. So from molecular level, if we're also looking at kind of the structure and the different types of folds that this protein has, we have the same number of glycosylation sites. So there's three on native lactoferrin, there's going to be three on our effera lactoferrin, whereas bovine or cow lactoferrin has five. Our secondary structure is also the same, and then our thermal stability, exactly the same as a native lactoferrin as well. We denature at the same temperature. So that is, you know, like I said, not just the amino acid sequence, but looking at that molecular and structure as well.
And the technology, precision fermentation, is what enables us to do this. You know, we're not extracting it. You know, if you're extracting bovine lactoferrin, you're still ending up with bovine lactoferrin, and that's the same thing with precision fermentation. I know that there's a couple lactoferrins that are available on the market that are bovine produced through precision fermentation, but even though they're using this really cool technology, it's still bovine, and it doesn't change that the amino acid sequence is not a match to our native lactoferrin as well.
Saraceno: Well, thank you for that breakdown. I think that helped a lot. What would you say the actual precision fermentation looks like, like at a practical level when it comes to this process for effera? Could you maybe break that down a little bit for the for some of the viewers? Because I'm sure they'd love to hear that. I know it could be detailed, but the best you can kind of just break that down for us a little bit.
Evans: Absolutely. I do want to preface by saying that we have an amazing team of chemical engineers and bioengineers, where this is their expertise. But I can definitely give you a high-level kind of summary of what precision fermentation is. I mean, we're probably all very familiar with fermentation as it relates to beer and wine. So we can think of this yeast or this medium that you know starts to produce our protein through fermentation, and then after that, there's a series of purification steps, purity steps, where the end result is this dried pink powder that we know as effera lactoferrin. And what's great about the precision fermentation is that it allows us to have kind of a high purity yield for this particular product, and once again maintaining that you know identical form to the human lactoferrin that we're looking for.
Saraceno: Interesting. Now, I'm curious, how are you able to actually like verify and demonstrate that it's that the ingredient's actually identical? Like, what's the what's the process like for that, like in terms of quality and benchmarks, because I'm sure that's another thing too people are going to look for these rigorous testing processes and proof of that. So how do you prove that the proof is in the pudding, I guess, per se?
Evans: Love that. I think a couple different steps. One, one thing that I think is really unique about Helaina as a company is that the first you know three, four years they were purely R&D. They dedicated to you know creating this protein because it's not a simple protein to produce through precision fermentation. It's a huge protein, it's you know we're trying to match the native lactoferrin, also it's a you know heavy, big protein as well, but we did have extensive testing for characterization, and so that was what allowed us to make sure that we were producing something that was native to lactoferrin, looking at that amino acid sequence, using these 3D analyses to look at the structure at the molecular level as well. And then, of course, from kind of the processing perspective, making sure that you know our end product is pure, it is free of heavy metals, free of any, you know, outside contaminants that we wouldn't want in it. So they do have extensive testing that goes through, you know, the batches that we produce. And then we've spent a considerable amount of time looking at the safety part of ours. So, you know, those very early studies that were coming out about effera lactoferrin were specifically focused on studies or safety studies, and now we're kind of transitioning to more of efficacy, right? So now that we've shown that this is safe, safe for human consumption, safe for even children to consume, really interesting study that showed that when consuming the effera lactoferrin, that there was actual no immune response from the body, whereas there was an immune response to bovine, and not in terms of like an allergic reaction, just more showing that the body really is recognizing our effera lactoferrin as the endogenous lactoferrin that our bodies produce. And so now we get to move into more of the fun stuff of looking at the efficacy and human clinical designs as well.
Saraceno: Yeah, that that is going to be interesting, and obviously the clinical substantiation is what our industry is really like. Everyone's looking for that, understandably so. So, yeah, thank you, thank you, Cassie, for taking the time to break that down. I really appreciate it.
