Reimagining Joint and Cognitive Health Across Lifespans: Inside PLT’s Portfolio

At the Future Nutra Innovation Summit, PLT Health's Steve Fink discusses joint, cognitive, and longevity nutrition explaining why "experiential longevity" is reshaping formulation strategy.

At the Future Nutra Innovation Summit in Lake Conroe, Texas, Nutritional Outlook met with Steve Fink, VP of Marketing at PLT Health Solutions, to unpack where the joint health and cognitive performance categories are headed and how "experiential longevity" is reshaping product innovation.

Fink traces joint health's evolution from a reactive, aging-population category built on slow-acting, high-dose ingredients to a fast-acting, low-dose model pioneered by PLT's AprèsFlex and expanded through Dynagenix, now formatted to reach younger, active consumers. The conversation's centerpiece is Kinexa, PLT's joint ingredient, designed to support the entire joint system including tendons, cartilage, subchondral bone, and synovia. Fink frames this as the foundation of "experiential longevity": a felt, near-term benefit that keeps consumers engaged for a lifetime journey.

The discussion then turns to cognitive health, where PLT's portfolio, including Zembrin, Zynamite S, zümXR caffeine, and Nutricog, addresses stim-free energy, focus, and neuroplasticity. Fink explains that cognitive nutrition is moving from a niche shelf category to a core formulation pillar with rising interest from younger demographics, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, seeking more solutions for stress and focus.

Nico Saraceno: Ladies and gentlemen, Nico Saraceno, senior editor of Nutritional Outlook magazine. We are reporting live from the Future Nutra Innovation Summit here in Margaritaville, Lake Conroe, Texas, a beautiful venue here. I'm joined by Steve Fink. He's the VP of Marketing with PLT Health. Steve, thank you for coming and taking a few minutes to speak with Nutritional Outlook.

Fink: Of course. Thank you for having me.

Saraceno: And I know you've had a busy schedule, and you're probably jet-lagged, and you're trying to just pull through.

Fink: It's all right. PLT, luckily, I work for a global organization bringing innovation all around the world, so was able to be spend a little time over at Vitafoods Asia, where we had incredible meetings, and now I'm here bringing that innovation to you know what I'm going to call this, a great think tank and multidisciplinary group of people leading the industry, so it's great to be here.

Saraceno: And keyword on innovation summit, too, because I think they're really pushing for the collaborative, innovative, you know, efforts, which is cool. And so that kind of leads me. You were on a panel actually just about 24 hours ago.

Fink: I was.

Saraceno: Could you maybe just share, you were with some great KOLs that Nutritional Outlook has worked with extensively. Could you maybe just get into the premise of what you guys talked about?

Fink: Yeah, we were really diving into the state of the joint health category, and what does that mean? I think if you if you look back a decade, joint health might have been considered, oh, that is an aging population concern. You need a trigger. I'm aged. I have some form of decline, and I need to treat it with something. I need to add something to my diet to help me. What we have seen over the years is that that category has expanded. It is, you know, and we have expanded with it. You know, when you looked at the original science approach, how do you address those need states? Well, you need something that's going to reduce inflammation or impact overall flexibility. And so you had solutions that were going in there. Typically, they were very large dose. It took a long time to work, to have efficacy.

And PLT stepped up to the plate and developed a number of things, such as a very fast-acting solution, something that would provide benefit in as little as 5 days, a very small dose, and we were able to kind of change the game in that space years ago. And then, as the industry continued to evolve and the consumers began to evolve, not only did you start to see a younger demographic become interested. I'm I might be 35 or 45, but I'm active. I'm running around. I'm playing sports. I'm picking up and carrying a lot of heavy boxes. How do I have something for me on the go? And guess what? I'd like something in a gummy. I'd like something in a stick pack. So the next evolution is how do we take that five-day solution, which was you know I'll just drop a name. That was our AprèsFlex flagship product, fast-acting, low-dose, boswellia-based product. How do we take the next step? We introduced Dynagenix. Dynagenix is a 40 milligram dose, and that allowed us to put it into gummies, put it into sachets, put it into ready-to-mix, and help address both older population, but also younger. So you need studies Yep. addressing that younger demographic, healthy population, and so that was a way that we saw that expansion of joint. What I what I wanted to talk about yesterday, we had so much to only so much time, but the new kind of next where we're seeing the evolution is what we call longevity or experiential longevity, particularly in the joint and contiguous joint area. How do I live the way I am living now. for a longer period of time? How do I allow my body to get in to the function and the system and impact not only inflammation?

I would say the solutions that are out there, and I'm not going to even talk about the competitive space, but typically, as I said, there's some form of a trigger when you're older. I want to address it. You're addressing a symptom. You're addressing whether it's pain or inflammation or tightness. You've also got to look at the structure. How can I do things to improve the overall joint function? And we could talk about that when we talk about Kinexa, but that's kind of where we see it's this this longevity, the horizon. That's really where I see things going.

Saraceno: Experiential longevity. I never heard that before. I like I like that concept. That's cool.

Fink: It's born at PLT, coined by PLT. Well, one of the things when you think about longevity, most longevity solutions that you see out there, they're on the shelf, they're what maybe they're $100, they're behind glass, and you kind of have had historically these longevity bros or longevity ladies that are trying to really get in there and say, Look, Yeah. I'm going to take this because I want to I want to live longer. I want to do something. I want something that's working in my cells that's doing something. But typically, when you're consuming it, you're doing it a bit maybe on faith. So you're taking it, and that's how you can have drop-off, the compliance can stop, because we live in an instant-gratification place. I mean, that's People want to feel something happening. Is it Do I feel impact on my body somewhat quickly? Can I demonstrate, you know, I feel better, things are going better. Yeah. And so if you can attack that, and that's why with our long history of fast-acting and small-dose, can we translate that?

And so, Kinexa, our next, next, next generation joint whole system approach. So you're talking about something that can impact the tendons, the subchondral bone, the synovia, the joint, the inflammation, the cartilage, and hit it as an entire system. If you're doing that, and you're keeping that system preserved, you're onto the next horizon of health, and that is where Kinexa has stepped in to change the game. And is it is that where we have a, you know, whether it's thrust or strength or overall function, that can be experienced, that can be felt, and so that can keep a lifetime journey because when you look at the joint, you know, our science team, I'll shout out Dr. Jeremy Appleton, and he's always talking about when you look at the joint as it ages, you're naturally everybody's going to get some kind of arthritis. It's you're destined. But if you can make if you can preserve a better state earlier in your life, and create a lifetime journey that's more enjoyable, more athletic, more flexible, then you've got a much better life, and that's what we see as experiential longevity. So it's kind of a much bigger felt experiential journey.

Saraceno: Thank you for that breakdown, and I know you got into Kinexa already, so we can even you put 2 in 1 there. So obviously you said longevity, joint health, also cognitive performance is also on PLT's agenda, especially here at FNIS. Yeah. How are you seeing those, that triple threat, I guess you could call it. How is it connecting for formulators, and where do you see like the most immediate opportunity when it comes to building products that can like span more than one of these functions?

Fink: Yeah, I think there was a great talk yesterday, you know, Raza from Iovate gave a discussion. They were talking about precision nutrition, and one at PLT we saw the importance of cognitive health long ago. So we were in this game years ago. We have an entire portfolio, whether you're looking for cognitive energy, cognitive focus, even the ability to socialize more effectively, to be able to stand close to each other and talk in a maybe a stressful moment, how do you get on camera, keep your mindset. So we have solutions like Zembrin that give you kind of this calm focus and you stay serene. We have ingredients like Zynamite S, which you can deliver non-stim mental energy. Maybe you I'm it's the end of the day, it's 4:00, we've been in a million sessions, and but I need to keep my mind going. So I want to energize my cognition, but I don't want to do it with stim.

Or you need something that you're going to I want caffeine, I love caffeine. Okay, give me zümXR caffeine, which is extended release and you can get that stim relief all day without some of the known negative side effects of caffeine. So we looked at all of that, and I think what you see with formulators is, if I'm in sport nutrition, the mind, having your mind in the game is important. If you're in something where you're multitasking or you need to memorize things or remember things more effectively, something like Nutricog can be there to really greatly enhance focus or the ability to multitask, move between decisions, have that like flexible approach or you know plasticity, neuroplasticity, and that's where we really see the future. I think that let's say a men's healthy aging or a once-a-day or a sport nutrition, cognitive used to just kind of be little space on the aisle, and now you actually see core formulas being formulated with cognitive approach, and I think I see more of that coming in the future, and so does PLT.

And so we've been growing and growing our portfolio of support, and we see a lot of formulators that are adding that in or creating that precision: I want this benefit, this benefit, this benefit, this benefit, so I can create a value to the consumer that's going to check all those boxes.

Saraceno: Yeah, and you mentioned the neuroplasticity aspect of it and things like that. So, how far away are we in terms of that being like, you know, being spot-on? Is it like a is that a next few years sort of thing, or is this like a dec- decades-long project? Like, where is that?

Fink: Thegood news is PLT is already there with it. I do see, you know, the pull from the market for it, you know, and I think what we're going to see also with it is an expansion of age demographics. I think much like joint in the old days, cognitive brands were you know, many, let's say 10 years ago, they were focusing on, I forgot. My memory, I can't remember, and they were going after an aging population. Now, you see a lot of much younger people really are entering the cognitive space. We see a lot of beverage functional beverages, powders. I want to be able to, you know, maybe I don't want to have alcohol anymore. I want to have this kind of, what we'll call, chill moment. I don't want alcohol, and you, you've you're finding these solutions in chill beverages, or functional beverages that are allow you to relax or to think more, to focus or detach and say, I'm going to attack my day.

So, where I see the future going is it is a much deeper expansion of the consumer bracket from younger to middle to aging, and so it's really transcending across all of those different demographics, whether Gen Z, Millennial, Gen Alpha even coming up. They're coming up very, they learn a lot. They're young. They're the future buyers. They're talking to each other, and they're also a little bit more receptive to admitting that they may have, I'm stressed out, or, I need I need to support this, and they don't want to get into a perhaps a drug solution. So, how do you stay within the nutritional space? But we see a lot of opportunity on the horizon. It's already there now.
