The Expanding Science of Magtein
Live from SupplySide Global 2026, Laurentia Bliss talks about new athlete-focused research on Magtein, ThreoTech’s brain-targeted magnesium ingredient, and upcoming innovations like effervescent tablets and gummies.
Live from SupplySide Global 2026, Nutritional Outlook’s Nicholas Jacobus speaks with Laurentia Bliss about new research on Magtein, ThreoTech’s brain-targeted magnesium ingredient, including a first-of-its-kind athlete study conducted by Dr. Jeremy Swisher’s team at UCLA. In the conversation, Bliss discusses the study’s findings on sleep and reaction time in collegiate athletes, the connection between brain-focused magnesium and sleep-driven recovery, and upcoming product innovations for Magtein, including effervescent tablets and gummies.
Transcript:
Nicholas Jacobus: ThreoTech recently announced results from the first study of Magtein specifically in athletes, carried out by Dr. Jeremy Swisher's group at UCLA. What did the team want to evaluate, and what did the early results suggest?
Laurentia Bliss: Yeah, so we were really excited to hear that Dr. Swisher's team with Hero Labs was going to conduct a study with Magtein. They were specifically looking at collegiate athletes' sleep and recovery time. So doing things where they are in all different sports. So we had, I believe, swimmers. We had all different types of cardio sports and cardio and weight based sports testing their reaction times and their sleep. The participants were able to have an increased sleep as well as increased reaction times. We were really happy to see these results because a lot of our studies really focused on the general population, where this was able to help us show the benefit of Magtein in a younger, more active group of people.
Jacobus: Sports nutrition is expanding beyond elite athletes to anyone with an active lifestyle. Why does sleep matter so much for recovery and performance, and where does a brain-focused magnesium fit in?
Bliss: Yeah. So, I think a brain-focused magnesium is really important for people, not only for athletes, but people with an active lifestyle. When you sleep, your body is regenerating and your brain is filtering through the daily activities that it did and deciding what to store as memory. So, really being able to have a magnesium that can enter the brain and help the brain do everything it does better, not only focus and things like that, but sleep and really that deep sleep that's going to be recovery and help you wake up feeling really refreshed is going to be really important. And we've seen success in that with Magtein.
Jacobus: Magtein is in more than 500 products from partner brands, and it works in capsules, powders, gels, and liquids and additional trials are underway for this ingredient. What do you anticipate for future developments?
Bliss: Yeah, we're really excited to showcase some new product innovation. We have effervescent tablets, which is really great for on-the-go. You can take one, drop it in your water. We're seeing things like elevated hydration take off with Magtein, so that's a really fun functional form that you can feel working pretty quickly. And we also have gummies, which traditionally have been a really challenging delivery format for magnesium. So we've been able to successfully develop a magnesium gummy with Magtein that's able to deliver the clinically affected dose while also tasting great.
