Algae-ingredients supplier Qualitas Health (Houston) has seen some setbacks over the past few years-most notably heavy flooding due to storms that damaged its Texas plant in 2015-but the company is now back on track with a brand-new supplement launch that will be sold exclusively by retailer H-E-B in Texas. The new supplement line is called alGeepa and features Qualitas’s trademark Almega PL algae strain. It includes formulas for cardiovascular health, eye health, joint health, and omega-3 support.

AlmegaPL is a 100% vegan, EPA-rich algal oil derived from Nannochloropsis oculata. The company has said that AlmegaPL’s polar lipid structure, containing both phospholipids and glycolipids, means the ingredient has a higher bioavailability.

“We couldn’t be happier to have H-E-B as our exclusive retailer as we disrupt the omega-3 category with a vegan alternative that’s proudly Texas Grown, with a GoTexan seal on every alGeepa product,” said Corinna Bellizzi, vice president of global sales, Qualitas Health, in a press release. “GoTexan, an effort of the Texas Department of Agriculture, promotes the products, culture, and community that call Texas home-a perfect fit for both H-E-B and Qualitas Health.”

“Most people don’t know that fish and krill get their omega-3s from algae,” added Miguel Calatayud, who joined Qualitas Health as CEO last March. “At Qualitas, we go directly to the source for the original omega-3s.”

The company says that since taking charge of the company last March, Calatayud has built a team of “veteran executives from the food and nutrition industry, as well as algae cultivation experts, to guide Qualitas through its upcoming product launches and production growth,” including a former executive from Nordic Naturals.
