Backed by clinical trials, the extended-release ashwagandha extract from Nutriventia, called Prolanza, supports stress relief, sleep, and cognitive health.

The ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) ingredient Prolanza from Nutriventia has received approval from Health Canada, earning the Natural Product Number (NPN 80143653). The ingredient is now authorized for sale as a licensed Natural Health Product (NHP) to consumers in Canada. Prolanza is marketed as Ashwanova in certain countries.

“This approval marks a significant milestone in Nutriventia’s global mission to deliver scientifically validated, consumer-centric natural ingredients,” stated Vishal Shah, co-founder of Nutriventia Limited, in a September press release. “With Prolanza, we bring the next generation of ashwagandha to Canada – combining traditional wisdom with modern delivery technology.”

Prolanza’s 300 mg extended-release capsules are intended to support stress relief, sleep, and visual memory. The ingredient will be available for formulation in Canada in capsules, tablets, gummies, and other formats. Applications also include stick packs.1 Prolanza was designed through the Nutriventia E.D.G.E. technology platform. In 2023, the ingredient was certified by the Clean Label Project, along with the Nutriventia bioavailable turmeric ingredient TurmXtra.2

Ashwagandha market growth in North America

As noted in the press release, according to Grand View Research, in 2023 the North American ashwagandha supplements market accounted for more than 37% of the global revenue, fueled by a consumer desire for holistic support for wellbeing, botanical supplements, and herbal remedies.3 Additionally, it adds, the U.S. market or ashwagandha supplements is anticipated to grow from 2024 to 2030 at a CAGR of 8.1%, driven by a desire for herbal remedies targeting stress, anxiety, and overall wellbeing.

“As more people are expected to add ashwagandha to their daily self-care routines, we are excited that Canadian consumers may now enjoy the benefits of Prolanza in an easy-to-consume low-dose,” added Shah. “They can also be assured of its efficacy as demonstrated by our clinical trials.”

Clinical evidence: stress relief and cognitive support

The 2021 clinical trial, “Efficacy and Safety of Ashwagandha Root Extract on Cognitive Functions in Healthy, Stressed Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study,” demonstrated Prolanza to be safe and effective for cognitive health support.4,5 In this study, 130 healthy and cognitively sound adults received either a daily 300 mg Prolanza capsule or placebo for 90 days, with measurements taken for cognitive functions, stress levels, sleep quality, and overall well-being. The participants had a baseline Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) score of 14–24. By the fourth clinical visit and at the end of the 90 days, the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) showed improved recall memory and decreased error rate in pattern recall in the supplement group.

Other results suggested a reduction in stress in the test group participants compared with placebo:

  • lower PSS-10 score
  • lower serum cortisol levels
  • lower Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score
  • higher Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) scores

The researchers concluded that the supplementation improved memory and focus, psychological well-being, and sleep quality.

“The results of this study illuminate why ashwagandha is known as the stress-busting adaptogen,” Anand Godbole, Nutriventia’s vice president of marketing, had stated in a press release on the study. “Further, consumers who are seeking noticeable reductions in stress response will appreciate Prolanza’s sustained-release delivery, which increases the duration of its effects, safely.”
