Magtein: ThreoTech’s magnesium innovation for cognitive support

Live from SupplySide Global 2025, Nutritional Outlook interviews Laurentia Bliss, director of brand management at ThreoTech, highlighting Magtein for cognitive health.

At SupplySide Global 2025, Nutritional Outlook Associate Editor Erin McEvoy interviews Laurentia Bliss, director of brand management at ThreoTech to discuss the ingredient Magtein, Magnesium L-threonate, explaining how it overcomes challenges with magnesium supplementation, supports cognition, and its use in food and beverage concepts.

Erin McEvoy: Hi everyone. I'm with Laurentia at ThreoTech. Thank you for joining us.

Laurentia Bliss: Absolutely. Thanks for having me.

Erin McEvoy: So what are some of the typical limitations of magnesium that manufacturers run into and how does Magtein overcome these limitations?

Bliss: Sure. Well, I think a lot of times when you're formulating with a magnesium there are many things you have to take into consideration, one of those being the delivery system you're looking at, so making sure you have a water soluble ingredient that's going to mix into beverages easily, a product that tastes good as well, but also the bioavailability, so is the product actually going to get where you want it to be. So all those things are really important to consider, and Magtein is a perfect solution for those things.

McEvoy: All right. So magnesium is recognized for a number of benefits. Magtein is marketed for cognitive health in particular. What are some of the unique features of the patented Magtein for cognitive support?

Bliss: Yeah, so Magtein is a unique form of magnesium that has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier. Most forms of magnesium aren't able to do that effectively, so you can't get the magnesium into where it needs to go to help improve cognition. And so Magtein solves that problem. Being able to get magnesium into the brain is really important for cognition, for things also like sleep and productivity, to help with overall cognitive brain aging. So all those things we've studied with clinical science, and we're really happy to be able to share those results with customers.

McEvoy: Couldyou tell us more about what functional beverages and supplements for Magtein are being featured in the innovation bar?

Bliss: Yes, absolutely. So we have some really great products that we're featuring today back at the AIDP booth, and one of the ones we're highlighting is the cogni-seltzer. So this is a really great effervescent tablet that we've worked with a partner, contract manufacturer to develop something that can be on the go, a little bit more accessible for people that maybe don't want to take capsules, and they can just drop it in some water and take their brain benefit on the go with them.

McEvoy: All right, thank you.

Bliss: Of course, thanks so much for having me.
