Gadot Biochemicals (Haifa Bay, Israel) is expanding the production capacity of its magnesium citrate ingredient to meet demand for applications that emphasize magnesium’s calming effect. Magnesium citrate offers superior absorption without the gastric side effects, as well as a more neutral taste.
“Many popular magnesium retail supplement products contain magnesium citrate because it offers calming properties, and it is also known to promote mental and muscle relaxation,” Ohad Cohen, CEO for Gadot Biochemicals, said in a press release. “This is an attractive benefit for stressed individuals who feel tense during the night as magnesium citrate has been proven to reduce nighttime muscle cramping.”
Michael A. Smith, MD, director of education for Fort Lauderdale-based Life Extension, said research supports magnesium’s role in relaxation and sleep as magnesium is needed for the synthesis of melatonin. However, Dr. Smith said, “anecdotally thousands of people swear by it.”
Overall, the scientific literature has shown that magnesium supports energy, movement, mobility, brain function, and mood.
