The expanded flagship facility is expected to increase efficiency and innovation as well as reduce the carbon footprint.

In a May 16, 2025, press release, BGG announced the expansion of its astaxanthin manufacturing facilities in the Yunnan Province in China in addition to establishing a new research laboratory. As explained on the company’s website, the natural astaxanthin product line (AstaZine) is produced from Certified Organic Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae and its health benefits include antioxidant and antifatigue properties and support for skin, eye, brain health, and more1. BGG’s 100% glass-tube photobioreactor microalgae platform, reportedly the largest globally, will now incorporate farming, extraction, drying and packaging within an approximately 12-mile area. The on-site research and development team will also more than double, and will focus on advancements in quality and innovation in microalgae ingredients, as well as work with various institutes for research on local tropical plants and fungi.

An inauguration day for the investment in the facility will be June 20.

“We are proud to unveil our latest investment in our state-of-the-art microalgae platform, spanning the entire value chain,” stated Chunhua Li, founder and principal shareholder of BGG, in the press release. “The enhanced synergy between manufacture and R&D will sharpen our innovation pipeline and accelerate speed to market.”

Previous expansions in 2023 and 2024 had doubled BGG’s production capacity.

“We are committed to staying ahead of global shifts to ensure uninterrupted service to our customers,” added Jürgen Nelis, BGG World CEO. “By strengthening our supply chain on multiple fronts, we are building a future-ready business that can thrive no matter how the trade landscape evolves.”

In addition to AstaZine, other product from BGG include ApplePhenon (apple polyphenols), CyaniMax (cyanidin 3 glucoside), FucoMa (fucoidan), LingonMax (lingonberry extract), and more.

BGG will be present at Stand 4D236 at Vitafoods Europe, taking place May 20-22 in Barcelona, Spain, and will be available to discuss the facility expansion, the company’s portfolio, and tariffs.
