According to the company, LFX is manufactured at under 5% iron saturation, the threshold generally used to define apo-lactoferrin, compared with roughly 20% saturation typical of commercial dairy-derived lactoferrin and more than 80% for heavily iron-loaded holo-lactoferrin.¹
This mirrors the naturally low-iron state of lactoferrin found in human breast milk. A 2025 peer-reviewed review in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry describes iron saturation as a key determinant of the protein's structural and functional properties, noting that apo- and holo-lactoferrin exhibit distinct biological activity depending on saturation level.²

The rationale behind apo-lactoferrin's antimicrobial function centers on iron sequestration. With binding sites open, the protein can capture free iron that bacteria depend on for growth, in principle limiting pathogen proliferation.
That mechanism is supported in general terms by the broader lactoferrin literature, but its effects are not uniform across pathogens. A 2016 study using a human in vitro gut model found that holo-lactoferrin, not apo-lactoferrin, delayed Clostridioides difficile growth and prevented toxin production, with the researchers noting the inhibitory effect appeared to be iron independent.³ That finding illustrates that iron saturation's effect on antimicrobial performance depends on the specific pathogen and mechanism involved, rather than uniformly favoring the apo form.
