Saw palmetto extract by Vidya receives U.S. patent

The saw palmetto extract, Vi-Spo, by botanical extract manufacturing company Vidya, has been awarded a U.S. patent. The extract, created using supercritical CO₂ extraction, is standardized to 3% beta-sitosterol and aims to address hormone imbalance.

“Standard saw palmetto extracts often lack the precision, potency, and consistency needed for reliable prostate support,” stated Aleksander Richards, research and development director at Vidya, in a May 30, 2025, press release. “With Vi-Spo, we’ve developed a patented composition that delivers clinically relevant outcomes through a clearly defined mechanism of action—setting it apart from generic offerings.”

Clinical studies have tested the effects of Vi-Spo. In one double blind, placebo-controlled randomized comparative study,¹ 91 participants with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and androgen deficiency were given enriched saw palmetto oil (500 mg capsule of Vi-Spo), conventional saw palmetto oil, or a placebo over 12 weeks. Results from the Vi-Spo group included decreases in scores on the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), Aging Male Symptoms (AMS) scale, and the Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male (ADAM) questionnaire compared with the placebo group. Additionally, significant changes were seen with the maximum and average urine flow rate and serum free testosterone levels compared to placebo.

In another study², the efficacy of Vi-Spo for testosterone-induced BPH was tested. Compared with conventional saw palmetto oil, Vi-Spo was demonstrated to be more effective in preventing the pathogenesis of BPH.

Vi-Spo is available to be formulated in men’s health, hair health, and women’s urinary health products.
