OmniActive’s Lutemax 2020 receives EU non-novel status

OmniActive recently disclosed that their Lutemax 2020 ingredient had received an EU non-novel status to be able to be used in food supplements.

OmniActive announced in a recent press release that the company’s Lutemax 2020 ingredient had received EU non-novel status, allowing its use in food supplements.1 The European Union’s Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 provided the formal determination and confirmed “the ingredient’s established history of safe use and paves the way for broader commercialization across the European market.”1

“This achievement reflects our commitment to rigorous compliance and scientific integrity,” said Arpita Tamhankar, director of regulatory affairs at OmniActive, in a press release.1 “The non-novel status reaffirms Lutemax 2020’s established safety profile and reinforces its position as a leading macular carotenoid ingredient for European markets.”

Lutemax 2020 is a patented ingredient that has been clinically studied and is produced from marigold flowers. It offers the three macular carotenoids in a 5:1 ratio that appears in the diet:

  • Lutein
  • RR-zeaxanthin
  • RS (meso)-zeaxanthin

The ingredient has shown potential in helping with blue light protection, cognitive health, and visual performance.1

“European customers can now confidently incorporate Lutemax 2020 into their products knowing it meets safety and transparency standards,” said Akhil Bajaj, divisional vice president, category management.1

In 2023, OmniActive launched in the U.S. the “Lutein for Every Age” campaign which helps educate both consumers and healthcare professionals on the lifelong eye and cognitive health benefits received from taking lutein and zeaxanthin.1 The organization has plans to continue expanding on that initiative in the European market later on in 2025.

OmniActive will be at Vitafoods Europe 2025, taking place in Barcelona, Spain, during May 20-22, 2025. Attendees at the event are welcome to visit the company and learn more about Lutemax 2020, at their Booth #4J27.
