Lycored Secures EU Patent for Ingestible Carotenoids for Skincare, UV Protection

Lycored (Secaucus, NJ) has secured an EU patent for its carotenoid compositions for skin health and UV protection. Specifically, the patent applies to ingestible use of the company’s carotenoid compositions, including its supplement-ready blend Lycoderm, in supplements, food, and beverages.

The company says that its carotenoid blends, which combine natural lycopene with phytoene, phytofluene, and vitamin E from tomatoes, are formulated specifically to protect the skin from UV radiation. The efficacy of these ingredients in protecting skin against harmful radiation was established in an “award-winning” study conducted by Lycored in 2016, it says. The study purportedly found that lycopene-rich tomato nutrition complex and lutein can help protect the skin from UVA, UVB, and UVA1 radiation at a molecular level.

Golan Raz, head of Global Health Division, Lycored, said in a press release: “Lycored is delighted that its carotenoid compositions for skincare have received an EU patent. This is the result of years of hard work and research and further supports our mission to make the benefits of carotenoids as widely available as possible. In addition to the EU patent, the company says that it has held a patent for its carotenoid compositions in Canada since 2014, and has also been granted a patent in Japan. The company is currently awaiting a decision on a pending U.S. patent.
