Vidya Expands US Footprint With Dedicated Probiotic Manufacturing Facility in Florida

New purpose-built site separates spore and non-spore production, signaling growing demand for clinically positioned biotics and greater emphasis on strain-specific manufacturing.

Vidya has opened a new probiotic supplement manufacturing facility in Bunnell, FL, expanding its footprint in the North American market and reinforcing broader industry trends toward localized, specialized production of microbiome-based ingredients.1

The new 28,750-square-foot facility is dedicated to the manufacturing of probiotic dietary supplements under tightly controlled environmental conditions designed to preserve microorganism viability, potency, and stability, which are key considerations in the development of effective microbiome products. With the new addition, Vidya’s Bunnell campus now exceeds 48,000 square feet, encompassing manufacturing, research and development, at its US headquarters.

Once fully operational, the expanded campus is expected to support more than 100 jobs, contributing to regional economic development while strengthening domestic production capabilities for biotics.

Facility Design Reflects Growing Complexity of Probiotic Formulations

The newly opened facility has been purpose-built specifically for probiotic processing, incorporating advanced environmental controls, dedicated processing zones, and integrated quality systems. These features support the full production workflow, from raw material handling and formulation to encapsulation and final packaging.

Notably, the site is designed to accommodate a wide range of product formats and applications, including single- and multi-strain probiotics, synbiotic blends, and delivery systems such as capsules, powders, stick packs, and sachets. The facility also supports multiple stages of product development, from pilot and clinical-scale production to full commercial manufacturing.

This level of flexibility reflects increasing demand from brands and formulators for customized, science-backed microbiome solutions tailored to specific health outcomes, a trend that has been gaining traction across the dietary supplement and functional food sectors.

Separation of Spore and Non-Spore Probiotics Signals Technical Advancement

A key differentiator of the new facility is its physical separation of spore-based and non-spore-based probiotic manufacturing into distinct buildings. According to the company, this makes it the first facility of its kind in North America to offer fully dedicated production environments for both categories.

This distinction is significant from both a technical and quality perspective. Spore-forming probiotics, often based on Bacillus strains, have different environmental and processing requirements compared to non-spore-forming strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. By isolating these production streams, manufacturers can better optimize conditions for each microorganism type, potentially improving stability, shelf life, and overall product performance.

The approach also aligns with a growing emphasis on strain-specific manufacturing protocols as the industry moves toward more clinically validated and targeted microbiome solutions.

Clinical Positioning and Quality Assurance

Vidya’s expansion comes at a time when demand for clinically substantiated biotics continues to rise. As previously reported by Nutritional Outlook, the microbiome category is expanding beyond digestive health into broader systemic applications, including immune and skin health, as research continues to uncover connections between the gut microbiome and whole-body wellness.2

Facilities designed to maintain strict environmental controls and ensure reproducibility are becoming increasingly important as brands seek to differentiate their products with clinical data and condition-specific claims.

In this context, investments in infrastructure—particularly those that prioritize strain integrity and process control—may play a critical role in enabling innovation and supporting regulatory compliance.

Supporting Growth in the North American Biotics Market

The opening of the Bunnell facility also reflects broader efforts by global ingredient suppliers to strengthen their presence in North America, a key market for dietary supplements and functional ingredients. Local manufacturing capabilities can help companies reduce supply chain complexity, improve responsiveness to customer needs, and align more closely with regional regulatory and quality standards.

According to Chandra Sekhar, Vidya’s global vice president, the investment underscores the company’s long-term strategy in the biotics space. “We are focused on building infrastructure that protects strain integrity and allows our partners to grow with confidence,” Sekhar said in a press release.
