
Pycnogenol's Hair Density Benefits: What the Data Really Shows
Franziska Weichmann, PhD, unpacks a double-blind study's surprising hair density and scalp health findings, and explains why timing, external stressors, and long-term use all valuable.
In this video interview, Nutritional Outlook Senior Editor Nicholas Saraceno speaks with Franziska Weichmann, PhD, Horphag Research's manager of scientific communications and product development, about a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study examining Pycnogenol's effects on hair health.
The study found a notable 30% increase in hair density at the two-month mark, which declined slightly to 23% by six months, even as scalp microcirculation continued improving throughout the full study period. Weichmann explains that the placebo group showed a similar rise-and-decline pattern, though less pronounced, suggesting the fluctuation may stem from external factors like seasonal or temperature changes rather than the ingredient itself.
Supporting this theory, skin barrier function—measured through transepidermal water loss (TEWL, the amount of water lost through skin)—followed the same trajectory as hair density. Weichmann notes that healthy skin should retain moisture rather than lose it, and the parallel pattern between TEWL and hair density reinforces the idea that outside stressors, not the product's efficacy, may account for the mid-study decline.
On the practical question of how long consumers should wait before expecting results, Weichmann points to the two-month timeframe from the study as a reasonable benchmark, while cautioning that individual factors, including personal stress and lifestyle, can influence outcomes.
She also addresses long-term safety, noting that extended Pycnogenol use has shown no adverse effects, citing a six-year study as one of the longest conducted on the ingredient without reported complaints. Many product formulations recommend starting with a higher dose before tapering to a maintenance level for ongoing use.

Nicholas Saraceno: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition of the Nutritional Outlook video series. Of course, I am Nico Saraceno, senior editor of Nutritional Outlook, and today I'm joined by Dr. Franziska Weichmann, she is Horphag Research's manager of both scientific communications and product development, where I know a lot of her time and efforts have been invested. So Dr. Weichmann, thank you so much for taking the time to to hop on today. I know we have a lot to talk about.

Saraceno: Absolutely. There's a lot of excitement in terms of research when it comes to, hair health and especially with Horphag Research. So why don't we go ahead and talk bout this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study that was conducted several years ago. It found quite a bit of fascinating findings, including a significant 30% increase in hair density at the 2-month mark, which it did decline a bit at 6 months to 23%.
But scalp microcirculation continued to improve throughout the entire 6-month time frame. So I'm curious, why do you think that they don't necessarily track together on the same timeline? And what do you think that suggests about how long a consumer should expect to stay on a product like this before measuring results? Because I feel like that's kind of a common question that a lot of people might have.
Weichmann: Exactly. We saw this 30% increase after 2 months already, which was very interesting to see. We did not expect such a significant increase actually. Exactly as you said, we saw this decrease a little bit of the improvement of hair density after the end of the study after 6 months. What was interesting actually was that the placebo control, even though it was not as high and not significant, followed the same pattern.
It was also a little bit more increased in the beginning and then less, so this led us to thinking that it's probably due to an external effect, maybe temperature changes, some seasonal changes. Stress. But what we also saw is that microcirculation of course is important for scalp health and skin health. What was also measured in this study was the skin barrier function. Skin barrier function was measured using the transepidermal water loss. Transepidermal water loss is basically the water that you lose through the skin, which you don't want to lose water through the skin. You want it to have like a nice barrier.
The function of the skin should be integrated. We saw that these skin barrier function followed the same pattern as the hair density. This could be one of the explanations why we could see a light decrease of this. This also hints to the same explanation that this might be an external stressor temperature wise to all the participants of the study.
Regarding your second question about the when could people see any effects, of course. in this study, we saw effects after 2 months, which was very interesting and nice to see within with a plant extract such nice effects. After 2 months in general, this is what people can expect and then depending also on their daily basis, on their life routine. Then maybe it's personal stress as well.
This also all impacts also how hair density and how skin health develops. We could see that taking Pycnogenol for a longer time has no problems. We didn't see any side effects of taking Pycnogenol for longer. Pycnogenol can be taken, for example, from what I've seen in many products, people tell the consumers to start with a higher dose, and then you can reduce to a lower level of dose and just take it indefinitely, because we didn't see any side effects. We even have a study for 6 years I think, which is one of the longest studies we have where we didn't see any people complaining.
