Omya (Oftringen, Switzerland) has introduced Calcipur, a natural source of calcium for use in baby food applications. Calcipur contains approximately 40% elemental calcium and its high stability makes it well suited to boost the calcium content of a variety of finished products such as baby milk powder, ready to use infant drinks, cereals, and biscuits.
The ingredient is available in two grades of calcium carbonate particles – 115-KP and 95-KP – to provide ideal enhancement of infant formulas. Calcipur also meets USP, FCC, and E170 purity requirements. Low impurity means that the ingredient contains levels of aluminum and cadmium well below reference values, and less than 0.5 ppm of lead.
Because of its high calcium content and bioavailability, compared to other products, five times less Calcipur is required to obtain the same calcium dose. Its fine particle size also helps prevent sedimentation and negative impact on mouthfeel. This also makes it ideal for ease of processing as an effective anti-caking aid for powders, reducing dusting, and helping correct pH-values.
Cracking the code: Advancements in calcium absorption and nutritional understanding
July 23rd 2024Recent research conducted by ILSI U.S. and Canada – a global, nonprofit federation dedicated to advancing precompetitive research in the food, nutrition and health realms – and partially funded by Balchem, has shed light on how to improve predictions of Ca bioavailability across different food matrices.
