Lipid-based medical foods supplier Vaya Pharma Inc. (Columbia, MD), a division of Frutarom Industries (Herzliya, Israel), is launching a new formula of its Vayarin medical food for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Vayarin Plus is an extra-strength medical food for the dietary management of ADHD in adults and teens over the age of 14 who weigh more than 97 lbs.

Vayarin Plus is an extension of Vaya’s existing Vayarin line of medical foods for ADHD. Vayarin, Vaya’s flagship ingredient, is formulated specifically for children between the ages of 6-13. The active ingredient in both Vayarin and Vayarin Plus is Lipirinen, a proprietary composition containing phosphatidylserine and omega-3 fatty acids enriched with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

The new adult formula comprises a patent-protected lipid composition that is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). It comes in a hard-shell capsule delivery format, which can also be opened and sprinkled on food. Vaya recommends a daily dose of 450 mg of Vayarin Plus, or two capsules.

According to Vaya, existing scientific literature indicates that there is a connection between lipid deficiency and AHDH. Vayarin Plus, it says, helps to balance patients’ lipid profiles and thus, to reduce ADHD behaviors in adults.

Michelle Cuccia, CEO, Vaya, said in a press release from the company: “Following the successful completion of our clinical trial, we are excited to offer Vayarin Plus to help improve the lives of adults and adolescents, giving them a new, efficacious, and safe non-drug option to manage their ADHD."

She continued: “Adult ADHD is a prevalent behavioral disorder that can lead to serious social and professional challenges for patients, and as a rapidly growing segment, there is a significant need for effective and safe non-drug options. People of all ages who are diagnosed with ADHD can benefit from using Vayarin and Vayarin Plus to manage their ADHD across different life stages."

Vaya notes that its medical food products are intended for use under medical supervision. One-month supply bottles of Vayarin Plus are available through a physician prescription; one- and three-month supply bottles are available online through the company’s Vaya Direct platform.
