Kemin Now a Zeaxanthin Supplier

Article

The company has entered a supply agreement with marigold grower Chrysantis Inc.

Kemin Health LC (Des Moines, IA) is now a supplier of natural zeaxanthin ingredients from marigolds, thanks to an exclusive partnership with plant breeder Chrysantis Inc. (West Chicago, IL).

Chrysantis breeds marigold flowers that are naturally high in zeaxanthin, a carotenoid found with lutein in nature and in human eyes. Like lutein, zeaxanthin is believed to play a critical role in normal eye health.

Kemin will supply natural zeaxanthin alongside its patented FloraGlo lutein brand. Both ingredients hold GRAS status for foods and beverages.

“A plant-based, dietary source of zeaxanthin from Chrysantis is a great strategic fit for Kemin,” saidJeff Flora, president of Kemin’s human nutrition and health. “Adding this new technology to our portfolio reinforces our continued commitment to provide quality, science-based ingredients with documented benefits for eye health and function, and overall nutrition.”

Previously published studies suggest that daily consumption of 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin may improve visual function and reduce the risk of certain age-related eye conditions.
