Industry’s first non-GMO high GLA borage oil announced by Bioriginal
A first of its kind in the nutraceutical industry, non-GMO borage oil was recently announced by Bioriginal.
The launch of a new cold-pressed borage oil was announced in a recent press release1 by Bioriginal Food & Science Corp., a natural foods, ingredients, and supplements manufacturer. The
The new product was created via Bioriginal’s selective breeding program which was able to obtain a higher GLA content and the genetic integrity of the plant over several generations. Bioriginal’s new seed variety is pending a global patent and will allow the organization to maintain exclusive rights. According to the press release, “This strategic innovation enables a consistent and potent source of GLA, allowing for reduced dosage requirements, streamlined formulation, and enhanced functional benefits across a wide range of health and wellness applications.”1
“Borage has been foundational to Bioriginal since our inception,” said Shannon Sears, president and CEO of Bioriginal.1 “This launch reflects our continued innovation in developing science-backed, high-quality ingredients that set new standards for the industry and empower our customers to create more effective, trusted health solutions.”
Bioriginal’s borage is cultivated in the Canadian prairies in a closed-loop system which offers end-to-end control throughout the production stages.1
Borage oil is a high potency natural option, when compared to other plant-based varieties of GLA such as primrose and black currant oils which usually contain 10-15% GLA. There is a GMO safflower oil variety that has gained some traction in the market but has concerned some brands and consumers who are interested in natural derived ingredient options, as well as clean-label formulations.1
Bioriginal’s borage oil can be utilized in various types of applications, including women’s health supplements, pet nutrition products for skin, coat, and mobility, joint health formulations, and beauty-from-within and cosmeceutical products which may include lotions and topical creams.1 As mentioned in the press release1, GLA may help support inflammation-related conditions such as eczema, allergies, psoriasis, arthritis, and cardiovascular-related conditions such as, stroke risk and hypertension.
Bioriginal will be highlighting the new borage oil product at Vitafoods Europe 2025 which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, during May 20-22, 2025. Attendees interested in learning more can visit Bioriginal at Boot #4F67.
