Dietary Supplement Caucus relaunched by bipartisan lawmakers
Bipartisan lawmakers recently relaunched the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus to discuss the role of science, public health, and regulation in dietary supplements.
In a joint statement, The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA) expressed
Representative Mike Kennedy, MD and Representative Marc Veasey are leading the re-launch of the caucus and will additionally be serving as co-chairs. The press release mentions that the caucus will be able to offer a space for lawmakers to discuss the roles science, public health, and regulation play in dietary supplements.1 It will also be a nonpartisan forum for Members of Congress along with their staff to meet with healthcare practitioners, industry stakeholders, and scientific experts. The caucus will also serve as honorary co-host for educational briefings containing up-to-date information on matters involving the supplement sector so that policymaking can be addressed to meet the issue. The filing to the House Committee on Administration mentioned that the mission for the caucus was to “discuss…the benefits of dietary supplements, provide tips and insights for better health and wellness, and to promote research into the healthcare savings these products provide.”1
Key policy areas trade groups anticipate will be addressed by the caucus in the 119th Congress include:1
• Modernizing the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA)
• Expanding eligibility of dietary supplements under Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
• Supporting increased FDA resources for oversight and enforcement
“Utah has played a major role in the dietary supplement industry, and that leadership deserves to be represented in Congress,” said Rep. Kennedy, in a press release.1 “This caucus is a way to support thoughtful discussion around health while ensuring people have the freedom and information, they need to make choices that work for them—without being burdened by unnecessary regulatory hurdles.”
Rep. Marc Veasey added,1 “The Dietary Supplement Caucus provides a unique opportunity for bipartisan cooperation on issues that matter to millions of Americans. From public education to regulatory transparency, this forum will help Congress engage more meaningfully with an industry that touches households across the country.”
The press release lastly mentioned that the first briefing of the Dietary Supplement Caucus will be taking place on July 23, 2025.1
