In a recent press release, Wiley Companies disclosed the relaunch of their AlaskOmega Omega-7 nutritional ingredient which will be showcased at this year’s Natural Products Expo West 2025 taking place in Anaheim, CA, from March 5-7, 2025. The product is a highly concentrated palmitoleic acid, also known as Omega-7, and is sourced from wild Alaska pollock. The ingredient is offered at both 50% and 70% concentrations which is up to seven times the potency of other omega-7 options, according to the press release.
AlaskOmega has shown some potential in peer-reviewed clinical research that the ingredient may be able to assist in helping anti-aging, as well as skin health. The press release mentions a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week study that investigated some of these properties surrounding AlaskOmega. Participants taking the nutritional ingredient reported moisture retention, wrinkle reduction, and skin elasticity improvements.
The study consisted of 109 female participants between the ages of 40 to 59 years old.1 After a screening test was performed, eight participants were excluded from the study, while the remaining 101 participants were randomly assigned. From that pool, 51 participants were placed in a control group, while 50 participants were placed in the 7-MEGA group to consumer the respective products over the course of 12 weeks. As the study was underway, three participants dropped out of the intervention group. Ninety-eight participants finished study.
Using a SV700, skin wrinkles were analyzed 2-3 cm away from the corners of both eyes and were divided into five parameters. Those parameters in the study were, “R1, skin roughness, referred to the difference between the highest and lowest wrinkle roughness peaks; R2, the maximum roughness, referred to the largest R1 value among the roughness sections divided into five equal lengths; R3, the average roughness, was the arithmetic mean of the single roughness depths of each of the five subunits; R4, the smoothness depth, referred to the average depth of skin wrinkles; and R5, the arithmetic roughness average, referred to the arithmetic average of the peaks of the roughness cross-section of the wrinkles.”1
Results showed that participants taking the omega-7 supplement saw significant improvements in skin wrinkles and elasticity after 12 weeks, compared to placebo, with observed improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, and melanin index as well.
AlaskOmega Omega-7 is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). In October 2019, AlaskOmega Omega-3 and Omega-7 concentrates received a “no questions” letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its self-affirmed GRAS status. Through this “no questions” letter, it shows that the FDA does not dispute the GRAS claim for the ingredient.
