UNPA, one of the architects of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, will wind down operations at the end of 2026, prompting reflection across the industry on the regulatory framework it helped build.

The United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), an association founded to help shape the regulatory framework that has governed the dietary supplement industry for 3 decades, will cease operations at the end of the year, following the retirement Loren Israelsen, its founder and president.1

The association was created in 1992 to help shape the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the law that established the modern pathway for supplement regulation in the United States. For manufacturers and ingredient suppliers who have relied on the alliance's advocacy and consensus-based policy work, the closure marks the end of an institution that predates much of the industry's current regulatory infrastructure.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), which has worked alongside the alliance on shared regulatory priorities, marked the announcement with a statement crediting Israelsen as one of the architects of that founding legislation and noting that his contributions to the industry are immeasurable.

"The dietary supplement industry is stronger because of Loren's vision, determination, and decades of service," noted Steve Mister, president and chief executive officer of CRN, in a statement to Nutritional Outlook.2 "His leadership helped shape the environment in which our industry has flourished, and his willingness to advocate tirelessly for responsible regulation and consumer access has earned the respect of colleagues across the industry."

Why Was the United Natural Products Alliance Founded, and What Made Its Approach Distinct?

The organization began under a different name, the Utah Natural Products Alliance, with 8 founding member companies that were often direct competitors. UNPA changed its name to the United Natural Products Alliance in 2005 to reflect the growing diversity and geographic reach of its membership, which expanded across North America, Europe, and Asia to include dietary supplement manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, contract manufacturers, analytical laboratories, scientific organizations, and service providers.

From its founding, the group operated on a consensus model rather than a hierarchical voting structure, an approach Israelsen has described as functioning more as an alliance than a conventional trade association, with no member holding senior voting rights over another.

What Regulatory Work Remains Before UNPA Concludes Operations?

The alliance has roughly 6 months of active work remaining before its scheduled close, during which Israelsen has indicated he hopes to see continued movement on outstanding regulatory priorities, including issues tied to the exclusionary rule and unresolved questions around new dietary ingredient notifications.

A broader reexamination of current good manufacturing practice requirements is also on his list of priorities, though he has acknowledged that timeline is unlikely to be completed before the organization winds down. The alliance's final member retreat is planned for September.

Why Is the Alliance Closing Now, and What Does It Mean for Industry Advocacy Going Forward?

Israelsen has framed the closure as a function of the industry's maturity rather than a gap in advocacy capacity, pointing to a now-broader landscape of trade associations and category-specific organizations that did not exist when the alliance was founded.

CRN’s statement echoed that the principles UNPA helped establish, particularly the regulatory framework preserved by the 1994 legislation, transcend any single organization and will continue to guide industry standards.
