Sami-Sabinsa celebrates the opening its new Hassan Unit-2 manufacturing facility, which is NSF cGMP certified and utilizes state of the art sustainability features. The facility is part of the company's stategy to expand its existing ingredient portfolio while also focusing on innovative new products.

On December 5, 2025, Sami-Sabinsa Group celebrated the opening of its new herbal products and ingredients manufacturing unit at the Pharma SEZ Industrial Area in Hassan, Karnataka, India. This is the second facility built in the area following the establishment of the NSF GMP certified Hassan Unit-1 in 2020, which produces Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. Hasson Unit-2 is the company’s ninth manufacturing facility.

“The new production facility in Hassan will strengthen our ability to serve customers worldwide with both patented and off-patent herbal products,” said Anju Majeed, PhD, Sami-Sabinsa executive group chairperson at the celebration. “It is also expected to significantly enhance the Sami-Sabinsa Group’s export performance and contribute to a strong increase in company revenue.”

Spread across 15 acres, the environmentally conscious, Zero Liquid Discharge facility has been designed to focus on user comfort, energy efficiency, responsible water management, and biodiversity enhancement. The facility is also compliant with cGMP standards and expected to generate employment for about 250 people in and around Hassan. The company also notes that 30-40% of the land has been reserved for future expansion, while also maintaining a green belt that covers more than 30% of the total area.

Looking more closely at the environmental and sustainability features, the combined facility is supported by comprehensive utilities that include vacuum systems, cooling and chilling compressors, steam boilers, and generators that provide 100% power backup. Additionally, both units operate independent Effluent Treatment Plants, with effluent being segregated into dedicated collection tanks for LTDS/HTDS, which are processed through a Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) system to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). No effluent is released outside of the facility and separate rainwater channels and harvesting pits have been implemented for effective water management.

Representing a $15 million planned investment, Hassan Unit-2 is part of Sami-Sabinsa Group’s strategy to expand its existing ingredient portfolio while also focusing on innovative new products. Hassan’s location also provides convenient access to ports on the east and west coasts of India.

Dedication to sustainability

In January of 2025, another Sabinsa facility, the Sami Kunigal manufacturing facility, received the Environmental Sustainability Award for “outstanding performance in environment, health, and safety.”

The company’s press release explained that the award recognized the facility’s safety standards, including fire safety, and health and first aid. With regard to environmental compliance, KSPCB cites the company’s use of a “self-supported boiler chimney (70 meters high and 400mm diameter) to manage emissions in line with PCB norms, showcasing environmental responsibility.” The board also noted water conservation efforts, with the facility’s implementation of a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) wastewater management system that “ensures no industrial wastewater is released into the environment, minimizing environmental impact.”

“This recognition not only highlights our dedication to safeguarding the well-being of our employees through stringent safety measures but also underscores our responsibility to the local community and the environment,” said Shaheen Majeed, global CEO and managing director of Sabinsa, in a statement. “It signifies the strong and enduring partnership between our plant and the KSPCB, and reinforces our shared goal of building a sustainable, safe, and health-conscious workplace. By meeting and exceeding the rigorous standards set by KSPCB, we continue to foster a harmonious balance between industrial growth, community welfare, and environmental preservation.”
