Maypro (Purchase, NY) has launched a new proprietary cognitive health ingredient called NeuroHD. It is the first non-synthetic histidine dipeptide (HD) complex derived from natural sources. HD is the collective term of two naturally occurring dipeptides, carnosine and anserine. Carnosine and anserine are well-researched for guarding against neuro-inflammation, anti-aging, scavenging of reactive oxygen species and neutralizing advanced glycation end-products. According to Maypro, the ingredient has been the subject of eight human clinical studies demonstrating its ability to help reduce markets of cognitive decline, preserve cognitive function, aid brain blood flow, reduce neuro-inflammation, enhance memory, reduce loss of memory, as well as support healthy weight and cardiovascular health.

The most recent study was published in the journal Aging1 in January of 2021. In the study, 36 elderly volunteers with mild cognitive impairment were given either 500 mg of NeuroHD or placebo for 12 weeks. Mini-mental state examinations (MMSE) were conducted at baseline and after ingestion. Results showed that subjects taking NeuroHD saw no deterioration of MMSE scores, compared to placebo. This was attributed to the significant decrease in C-reactive protein (CRP) and the enhancing of cerebral blood slow in subjects.

NeuroHD is produced by Maypro’s Tokyo-based partner Tokai Bussan. The ingredient is well-suited for beverage-use as well as conventional capsule applications.

“We are excited to be partnering with Tokai Bussan in offering this science-backed complex to the U.S. market,” said Denis Alimonti, director of Maypro’s proprietary branded ingredient department, in a press release. “Given the graying of the U.S. population, we believe that NeuroHD has immense potential, and we look forward to working with customers on unique formulations with this impressive ingredient complex.”
