Live from SupplySide Global 2026, Nutritional Outlook’s Nicholas Jacobus speaks with Brian Appell, product manager Givaudan, about the launch of NovaBerin, a patent-pending botanical combining barberry and amla positioned for the metabolic health market. In the conversation, Appell discusses how GLP-1 medications are reshaping consumer perceptions of health beyond the drugs themselves, the growing, $15-billion metabolic health category within the broader longevity market, and why the conversation is expanding to reach younger consumers.
Transcript:
Nicholas Jacobus: Givaudan says GLP-1 trends are changing the wellness market, is your new ingredient positioned as a complement to GLP-1 users, an alternative for people who aren’t using them, or both?
Brian Appell: I think with the GLP-1 market, we like to think beyond the GLP-1 market. What we're really seeing is understanding is how GLP-1s are transforming the consumer perception around what it means to be healthy, and what we're really seeing is the idea of metabolic health as an emerging trend for consumers, regardless of whether it's GLP-1 or not, right? The market has become this idea of awareness of how healthy weight, blood sugar, and blood lipids really play into this idea of what it means to be healthy and how it means to live a longer life and a healthier life.
So when we talk about is it for one or the other? What we like to think is it's for a consumer whose focus really is on this idea of continuing their journey for healthy living, the longevity journey, as we like to call it, and we feel that metabolic health is really focused on that, and that's what NovaBerin is really focused on: metabolic health.
Jacobus: What is one major takeaway from Givaudan’s educational session on metabolic health as a driver of product innovation in the longevity market?
Appell: Well, first, I would say if for any customer or people who are not looking at there, I'll just stare at that real quick. Metabolic health is a big category. It's a growing category, and it's a growing category within the longevity market. As we mentioned at the speaking session, it's a $15 billion category. It's a huge category that continues to grow. Longevity is one of the fastest growing categories in this space, so that would be one of the key takeaways. The other one, if I can, Nick, is to say that for us, metabolic health and the idea of longevity is not a older consumer group anymore. You really have to start looking at what does this space mean for younger consumers? How are they approaching it, and what messaging really resonates with them to really start honing in on that market as well.
