Clinical study shows Pycnogenol reduces cellulite in women
The French maritime pine bark extract demonstrated greater efficacy in improving cellulite score and skin roughness in a placebo-controlled study.
A recently published study examined the effects of supplementation with Pycnogenol by Horphag Research on cellulite severity as an alternative to invasive or topical routines. Pycnogenol is an extract from French maritime pine bark, which, as the study explains, is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The
The study involved 60 women, ages 25 – 45, with a moderate amount of cellulite, who were given a daily oral supplement of 150 mg of French maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) capsules (one 50 mg capsule in the morning and two 50 mg capsules in the evening) or a placebo for 60 days. Cellulite was measured using the Hexsel cellulite severity score (HCSS).
Highlighted results included:
- After 2 and 3 months, the clinical cellulite score improved by 12.2% and 13.6% respectively in the test group, compared with an insignificant improvement in the placebo group
- A significant decrease in thigh circumference (-2.07 cm) was also seen at 3 months in the test group, while the placebo group demonstrated a 0.9 cm decrease
- Skin roughness in the test group decreased by 32% after 3 months, while the placebo group showed a 6% decrease overall
- Skin smoothness increased significantly over time in the test group compared with placebo
No adverse effects were observed. The researchers concluded the supplement could be suitable for protecting or postponing against moderate cellulite.
"Cellulite is incredibly common—impacting up to 90% of women—and while often seen as frustrating, it doesn't have to undermine confidence," stated author and natural physician, Dr. Fred Pescatore in a June 5
The press release also noted the extract contains a combination of procyanidins, bioflavonoids, and phenolic acids, and that the ability of Pycnogenol to stimulate collagen production has been tested in 25 published studies.
"Wellness is the foundation of timeless beauty, and Pycnogenol is one of those rare ingredients that truly bridges inner health with visible results,” stated Danielle Lin, CN, lifestyle radio and podcast host. “For women looking to refine skin tone and texture naturally, this research offers a smart, science-backed solution. It's a beautiful blend of nature and innovation that empowers us to feel confident in our own skin."
