Danisco to Market Pine-Derived Phytosterols

Danisco (Copenhagen) has signed a long-term agreement with Arboris (Savannah, GA), the world’s largest producer of pine-derived phytosterols, to market Arboris’s phytosterols.

Danisco says that Arboris’s large-scale production and integrated access to pine tall oil, the key raw material, will provide Danisco with high-purity free and esterified phytosterols. The company also says that the phytosterols produced by Arboris are derived from a more-stable raw-material source compared to alternative phytosterol raw material, such as soy deodorize distillate, ensuring sustainable growth opportunities.

“While markets in Europe and, to some extent, the U.S. have seen good penetration, many parts of Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America have yet to experience a broader adoption of phytosterols,” commented Patrick Veau, vice president of health and nutrition for Danisco. The company says the global phytosterol market, currently estimated at more than USD $300 million, is growing annually at 7 to 9%.
