Protein…and Insects?
Protein…and Insects?
Chris Lee, Vitafoods Europe portfolio director, predicts protein will be a standout ingredient at the show. “I expect to see further innovations in this category, particularly with sources of protein also changing as manufacturers turn to new ingredients over and above traditional soy and whey.”
Did someone order insects? “In addition to chia and quinoa, the use of insects as a source of protein also looks set to be a big trend in the coming years,” Lee predicts. Curious to hear-and taste-more? One exhibitor, 4ento, will feature “exotic” edible insect offerings at its booth.
Lee also expects the “obesity debate to be in full swing, with exhibitors offering manufacturers a range of innovations that will drive new product development in this area.”
“With the most recent WHO figures suggesting that 1.4 billion adults over the age of 20 were obese, the global obesity epidemic is clearly an issue that can’t be ignored,” he says.
Personalized nutrition and the role of nutrigenomics will also be part of the industry chatter.
