USP has been named as a participating certifier in Amazon’s Compliance Fast-Track Program.

US Pharmacopeia (USP) announced in a recent press release that Amazon chose the private scientific organization to be a participating certifier in the company’s Compliance Fast-Track Program. Supplements that hold the USP Verified Mark will be “automatically recognized” as adhering to Amazon’s safety and quality requirements. This removes the necessity for manual submission documentation and allows for faster, easier access to Amazon’s market.1

“Seventy-five percent of American consumers use dietary supplements, and these consumers are increasingly turning to online marketplaces to purchase products that support their health and wellbeing. However, not all dietary supplements are created equal,” explained Holly Chang, Vice President of Verification Technical Services at USP.1 “Many consumers are unaware that dietary supplements are not bound by the same stringent regulations as pharmaceutical products, making it all the more important for marketplaces like Amazon to take an active role in preventing substandard products from reaching their customers.”

“Amazon’s decision to strengthen quality oversight for dietary supplements sold on the platform is a positive step for the entire industry,” said Emily Rose Britton, PhD, Senior Manager of Market Development, Dietary Supplement & Ingredient Verification Programs at USP.1 “USP’s recognition as a participating certifier reflects the program’s rigorous standards and supports a broader effort to improve product quality and transparency for consumers, manufacturers, and retailers alike.”

The Dietary Supplement Verification Program from USP is a voluntary program that is available globally to dietary supplement manufacturers for finished products. Under the program, these products undergo verification through rigorous testing, comprehensive, and evaluation processes that recurs annually.1 This maintains consistency that the products adhere to quality standards. According to the press release1, the USP Verified Mark means that a dietary supplement:

  • Contains the ingredients listed on the label in the declared strength and amounts.
  • Does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants, such as heavy metals and pesticides.
  • Complies with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices, using sanitary and well-controlled processes.
  • Will break down and dissolve within a specified amount of time so the dietary ingredients can be released and absorbed by the body.

Currently, more than 160 dietary supplements have obtained the USP Verified Mark. This includes supplements, such as single vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, and Vitamin D), multivitamins, minerals (iron and magnesium), and other supplements (melatonin, probiotics, and botanicals). Through this mark, the ensures that what is listed on the label is what is included in the product.

Vitaquest International Manufacturing Sites Obtain USP Verification

In a January 2024 press release2, Vitaquest International (West Caldwell, NJ) announced that the company had successfully completed the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Quality Systems GMP Audit Program for three of its facilities. The company explained that this was a multi-step process that included GMP facility audits, as well as product quality control and manufacturing process evaluation. The certification gives the company’s clients and consumers increased confidence that Vitaquests’ products are made to the industry’s highest standards.

“This is an incredible milestone for our organization and is a testament to our commitment to top-notch manufacturing systems and processes, reinforcing our position as an industry leader for dietary supplements,” said Patrick Brueggman, president, and chief executive officer of Vitaquest, in the press release. “The successful completion of USP’s comprehensive review process helps demonstrate the high quality of our dietary supplement products and underscores our team’s dedication to providing our clients and consumers with products that meet GMP standards."
