BASF (Ludgwigshafen, Germany) has opened a new research center in Tarrytown, NY, dedicated to developing more-efficient and resource-conserving biotechnological production processes for products such as vitamins, enzymes, pharmaceutical intermediates, and other products for personal care, food, and feed.
The company says it has more than three decades of research in so-called “white biotechnology.” One example of white biotechnology is using metabolic engineering, or the modification of metabolism, to enhance the efficiency of microorganisms used in production.
