An oil-soluble green tea extract for maintaining the stability and shelf life of foods has been deemed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in the U.S, recognized by FDA. The ingredient, GT-Fort, is a product of Kemin (Des Moines, IA).
“GT-Fort harnesses the antioxidant properties of green tea in an oil-soluble form to significantly delay lipid oxidation in food, thus extending shelf life in a consumer-friendly way,” explains Kemin in a press release.
GT-Fort is suited for oils, snack foods, bakery products, sauces, and dressings, the company says. It gives manufacturers a clean-label replacement for less desirable ingredients.
Courtney Schwartz, marketing director, Kemin Food Technologies, says GT-Fort “has a body of science proving it to be efficacious as an antioxidant,” noting that “GT-Fort is a consumer-friendly antioxidant solution to help maintain the stability and shelf life of fat-containing foods.”
