Net sales are up 54% for microalgae supplier Cyanotech Corp. (Kailua-Kona, HI) compared to last year, the company recently announced.

The first quarter of fiscal year 2012 (ending June 30, 2011) brought in $5,950,000 compared to $3,856,000 during the same quarter for fiscal year 2011.

Cyanotech produces BioAstin natural astaxanthin and spirulina in tablets, powders, extracts, and other forms. The company’s improving sales are largely attributed to astaxanthin sales, which are up 97% over the same time frame. Spirulina sales grew by 12%.

“The significant increases in packaged product sales are attributed to our focus on the growing consumer market for health and nutrition supplement products, combined with recent media reports regarding the benefits of both astaxanthin and spirulina,” the company said in a recent press statement.
