The company's new capsules are derived from a fermentation process on tapioca.
Capsugel (Greenwood, SC) announced its newest vegetarian-sourced capsules at Natural Products Expo West. Called Plantcaps, the capsules are made from pullulan, a water-soluble polysaccharide from naturally-fermented tapioca.
Plantcaps isn’t your average vegetarian/vegan-friendly capsule. According to Capsugel Americas region director of sales Mark Vieceli, the capsule can also comply with organic standards. “Certifying agencies have allowed organic labeling for some ingredients delivered in pullulan capsules in the United States due to the capsule’s naturally fermented source,” said Vieceli.
The company says that another advantage of Plantcaps is its strong oxygen barrier, which can mask pungent tastes and odors from ingredients such as garlic.
Plantcaps capsules are allergen-free, non-GMO, preservative-free, gluten-free, and certified kosher and halal.
