Inonotus obliquus, or chaga mushroom, is a fungus that primarily grows on birch trees. According to Kilham, chaga has significant immune-enhancing effects, as well as possible potential anticancer effects. “Chaga is extensively well-studied and well-used in Russia and certain parts of Asia, but it is just starting to gain a presence here in the Western market,” says Kilham. “It’s not nearly as popular as some of the other fungi like reishi, shitake, or maitake. But it certainly deserves to be, based on its very profound benefits for health.”
