A study1 recently published in the Journal of Probiotics & Health found that supplementation with a probiotic strain of Bacillus subtilis (DE111, from Deerland Enzymes; Kennesaw, GA) can improve occasional constipation and/or diarrhea in healthy individuals.

DE111 is a genome-sequenced and clinically tested Bacillus subtilis strain. Genome sequencing confirms that the strain contains no plasmids, antibiotic-resistant or deleterious genes, while the human clinical studies demonstrate its ability to control microbial populations, aid digestion, and maintain general health. DE111 also forms spores that protect the microbes from harsh conditions until they enter an environment ripe for germination, such as the GI tract. This spore-forming ability maintains DE111’s viability across a range of temperature and pH, including those encountered in supplements and functional foods and beverages.

In the study, 50 participants received either 1 billion CFU of Bacillus subtilis DE111 via capsule or a placebo for 105 days, during which time the researchers evaluated the subjects’ stool profiles, food diaries, and study questionnaires. Stool scoring followed the Bristol Stool Chart index and safety was assessed using blood markers.

Results showed a reduction of alternating constipation and diarrhea for the participants taking DE111 compared to those taking the placebo. The proportion of normal stools rose from 54-64% in the DE111 group, while those in the placebo group fell from 56-48%. In male participants specifically, the proportion of normal stools grew from 56-80%. Further, a significant difference between the DE111 and placebo groups was observed vis-à-vis normal and non-normal stool proportions in the 30-and-older age group.

According to John Deaton, vice president of science and technology at Deerland Enzymes and Probiotics, “Bacteria make up more than 50% of the composition of a healthy person’s stool, and play a major role in the quality and frequency of bowel movements. Determining specific strains, such as DE111, that support regular and healthy bowel movements is beneficial in developing a probiotic formulation for digestive health.”
