In response to the mounting concerns of foodborne pathogen outbreaks in sprouted products, Glanbia Nutritionals (Carlsbad, CA) has launched a new line of heat-treated sprouted-seed ingredients that it says offer the strongest safety credentials of any sprouted ingredients on the market. Its new ChoiceGrad Brown Sprouted MP and ChoiceGrad Golden Sprouted MP are both flaxseed ingredients suitable for ready-to-eat food products.

In its launch announcement, Glanbia Nutritionals notes that despite the specter of foodborne pathogens in sprouted ingredients, there are currently no officially regulated steps to prevent bacterial growth or eliminate pathogens in sprout production.

“Aiming to address this gap, Glanbia Nutritionals’ processes include a robust seed-selection management and traceable supply chain, carefully controlled germination of mucilaginous seeds, as well as air and water quality control,” the firm explains. “Low-heat drying steps lock in nutrients and ensure vitality of seed. A further validation process tests seed purity and the ability to germinate, creating sprout seed ingredients with the highest safety and quality standards.”

The new heat-treated sprouted seeds are produced through Glanbia’s MeadowPure process of sourcing, cleaning, and sorting seeds, in addition to heat treatment with Glanbia’s MicroSure Plus system to help “ensure optimal purity, stability, and shelf-life.”
