OmniActive Health Technologies (Bridgewater, NJ and Mumbai, India) has announced a partnership with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN; Washington, D.C.) to educate and raise awareness about the role of lutein and zeaxanthin in supporting maternal and fetal health during pregnancy among obstetricians, gynecologists, and other maternal healthcare practitioners. This knowledge will be shared at The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s (ACOG) Annual Clinical & Scientific Meeting. OmniActive is

 to showcase the latest research and developments in prenatal nutrition through a specially designed “Prenatal Nutrition Center” at the conference. 

“It’s wonderful to have OmniActive as one of our featured partners during the ACOG annual event to help spread the word on the importance of prenatal nutrition,” said Andrea Wong, PhD, senior vice president, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs for CRN, in a press release. “CRN continues our efforts in supporting supplement manufacturers and ingredient suppliers in bringing clinically studied products to consumers to help meet their nutritional needs. Advancing awareness at the physician’s level is a huge part of this equation and this meeting is an effective way of reaching them.”

Citing market research from SkyQuest Technology, OmniActive explains in its press release that prenatal supplement sales were estimated to be at $740 million in 2023 and projected to rise to $1.4 billion by 2031. Similarly, a recent 

 found that about 60% of gynecologists think that 80-100% of their pregnant patients take dietary supplements. There is therefore a great deal of opportunity to grow and advance this category. Lutein and zeaxanthin are known for their support of eye health, but these benefits are relevant during pregnancy as well, says Deshanie Rai, PhD, FACN, vice president of Global Science, Regulatory and Advocacy at OmniActive Health Technologies.

“Current evidence supports the preferential accumulation of lutein and zeaxanthin in the human eye and neural tissues during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester. This suggests that lutein may play a functional and protective role in infant visual and cognitive development. As part of our Lutein for Every Age campaign, our goal is to help educate healthcare practitioners on this latest nutritional science research and the benefits of achieving adequate dietary lutein during pregnancy,” said Rai, in a press release. “OmniActive is proud to partner with the CRN Foundation’s Prenatal Nutrition Centre to promote awareness among healthcare practitioners on the nutritional relevance of lutein for both mom and baby.”

The educational initiative, “Lutein for Every Age,” focuses on raising awareness of early and consistent lutein and zeaxanthin intake to help support eye, cognitive, and general health throughout life, explains OmniActive. The AOCG meeting is taking place from May 17-19, 2024 in San Francisco, CA.

Vitaquest joins International Probiotics Association to support probiotic use guidelines

 found that the antioxidant, N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), could protect adolescent brains from developing anxiety and depressive behaviors caused by sustained exposure to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). NAC, available as a dietary supplement, has been generally proposed as a treatment for neuropsychiatric conditions due to its ability to regulate neurotransmitter balance, regulate oxidative stress, and more.

As explained in the study, sustained exposure to THC in early adolescence can lead to “neuropsychiatric vulnerability, including mood and anxiety-related symptoms” later in life. In particular, nucleus accumbens (Acb), a common link for signaling pathways related to affective disorders and addiction, is susceptible to alteration by THC. Additionally, developing brains are sensitive to oxidative stress, which cannabis increases. Mood and anxiety disorders are associated with compromised antioxidant responses.

Using rodent models, the researchers tested the effect of THC on adolescent rats and the effects of NAC as an intervention. “We report that adolescent THC induces long-lasting anxiety and depressive-like phenotypes, concomitant with dissociable molecular and neuronal activity alterations in AcbSh vs. AcbC,” the researchers stated. “Remarkably, NAC administration normalized these THC-induced phenotypes while preventing dysregulations in metabolomic biomarkers associated with mood and anxiety-related pathophysiology.”

“Our study provides several novel discoveries linking the impacts of cannabinoid-induced striatal pathophysiology on markers for affective dysregulation which is a concerning risk factor for chronic adolescent cannabis use,” the researchers concluded. “Importantly, the present findings suggest that antioxidant interventions may serve as a potential pharmacotherapeutic approach to the prevention of neurodevelopmental disorders induced by cannabis exposure.”

Layn Natural Ingredients (Irvine, CA) has launched a polyphenol-rich botanical extract for joint health support that can be used in pet foods, treats, and supplements. The ingredient called TruGro CARE Joint Health is a synergistic blend of three extracts derived from epimedium, pomegranate and mango leaf that work together to support healthy inflammation as well as bone, cartilage, and muscle health, says the company in a press release.

According to the company, epimedium is a source of a flavonoid called icariin, which has been shown in research to reduce bone resorption and promote osteoclast production, protecting against bone health.
