Keraplast Manufacturing announces that its keratin ingredients meet and exceed European requirements for trace nitrosamine levels

AIDP Inc. (City of Industry, CA) has announced that one of its suppliers, Keraplast Manufacturing (Christchurch, New Zealand), has met and exceeded the requirements for nitrosamine content set forth by the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS). New European legislation prohibits nitrosamines in cosmetic products, and the SCCS limits traces of N-nitrosamines in raw materials used as ingredients in cosmetics and in finished cosmetic products to 50 parts per billion (ppb).

Nitrosamines are impurities that can appear in a range of cosmetic ingredients and finished products, including personal care products such as conditioner, shampoo, and lotion. The reason the EU is placing limits on trace levels is because research indicates there is a connection between nitrosamines and an increased risk of cancer. According to Keraplast Manufacturing, independent testing shows that its keratin products have trace nitrosamine levels less than 1 ppb.

The company states that its keratin is made from regeneratively farmed wool sourced from live animal, cruelty-free. Keroplast’s ingredients meet the requirements of vegetarian and halal status, and are used in skincare and haircare products, as well as nutraceuticals.
