OmniActive Health Technologies (Bridgewater, NJ and Mumbai, India) has announced a partnership with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN; Washington, D.C.) to educate and raise awareness about the role of lutein and zeaxanthin in supporting maternal and fetal health during pregnancy among obstetricians, gynecologists, and other maternal healthcare practitioners. This knowledge will be shared at The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s (ACOG) Annual Clinical & Scientific Meeting. OmniActive is

“It’s wonderful to have OmniActive as one of our featured partners during the ACOG annual event to help spread the word on the importance of prenatal nutrition,” said Andrea Wong, PhD, senior vice president, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs for CRN, in a press release. “CRN continues our efforts in supporting supplement manufacturers and ingredient suppliers in bringing clinically studied products to consumers to help meet their nutritional needs. Advancing awareness at the physician’s level is a huge part of this equation and this meeting is an effective way of reaching them.”

Citing market research from SkyQuest Technology, OmniActive explains in its press release that prenatal supplement sales were estimated to be at $740 million in 2023 and projected to rise to $1.4 billion by 2031. Similarly, a recent 

 found that about 60% of gynecologists think that 80-100% of their pregnant patients take dietary supplements. There is therefore a great deal of opportunity to grow and advance this category. Lutein and zeaxanthin are known for their support of eye health, but these benefits are relevant during pregnancy as well, says Deshanie Rai, PhD, FACN, vice president of Global Science, Regulatory and Advocacy at OmniActive Health Technologies.

“Current evidence supports the preferential accumulation of lutein and zeaxanthin in the human eye and neural tissues during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester. This suggests that lutein may play a functional and protective role in infant visual and cognitive development. As part of our Lutein for Every Age campaign, our goal is to help educate healthcare practitioners on this latest nutritional science research and the benefits of achieving adequate dietary lutein during pregnancy,” said Rai, in a press release. “OmniActive is proud to partner with the CRN Foundation’s Prenatal Nutrition Centre to promote awareness among healthcare practitioners on the nutritional relevance of lutein for both mom and baby.”

The educational initiative, “Lutein for Every Age,” focuses on raising awareness of early and consistent lutein and zeaxanthin intake to help support eye, cognitive, and general health throughout life, explains OmniActive. The AOCG meeting is taking place from May 17-19, 2024 in San Francisco, CA.

NutraShure, a nutraceutical ingredient distributor, will be returning to Las Vegas, Nevada, from October 30-31, 2024. Founded in 2021, the company hopes to improve the length and quality of life of their consumers and that aging doesn’t need to be connected with a lower quality of life, according to a recent press release.

For the SupplySide West 2024 show, NutraShure will spotlight two new ingredients called BIOMEnd and SA3X. The company will also showcase their legacy ingredients 3DPump Breakthrough, and Polynol.

As mentioned in the press release, the company provides some further details on these ingredients:

According to the company, this is the first patent-pending tasteless butyrate on the market. Butyrate is a four-carbon short-chain fatty acid that naturally occurs in certain foods, and is produced by gut bacteria during the fermentation of dietary fibers. The company says that BIOMEnd is a unique composition formulated as L-Lysine Butyrate, allowing it to have good solubility in liquids, setting it apart from other butyrate ingredients on the market, and eliminating any concerns regarding taste, uneven distribution, and sedimentation. BIOMEnd is applicable across solid dose use as well as in gummies, chocolates, and other food products.

 This clinically studied ingredient derived from the 

 plant, has a long history of use in traditional folk medicine and now used in mens’ health formulations and nutritional products. Clinical studies have shown that the ingredient may increase men's muscle size, strength, and sexual satisfaction. In one study, 326 healthy sexually active men used SA3X for three months. Researchers observed a significant increase in mean serum testosterone levels after only two months of use.

 In a randomized, placebo-controlled study of 448 men, participants taking the ingredient reported an 80% increase in sexual satisfaction after only 8 weeks, with most reporting results within the first 7 days.

 SA3X is also versatile, with broad applicability across solid dose use (capsules, tablets, RTM powders), as well as in RTD beverages.

This triple action ingredient combines the following:

 an amino acid that enhances nitric oxide production and blood flow.

aids in enhanced cell volume and fullness to support exercise tolerance in terms of time-to-exhaustion by approximately 24%.

When combined, the 3-in-1 formula is meant to deliver muscle volumization potential, support performance, reduce perceived exertion, and support stamina, especially in heat-stress environments.

A natural sugarcane extract rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins is designed to reduce oxidative stress and support healthy blood glucose. According to the company, studies have shown that Polynol significantly improves insulin response in metabolically compromised individuals while pre-clinical data suggests that it could also have photo-protective effects, supporting healthy skin appearance and UV skin protection.

In a recent press release, Funtrition and Sofgen, two contract manufacturers and advanced gummy and softgel technologies developers, respectively, announced the ingredients and products they will showcase at SuppySide West 2024 in Las, Vegas, NV October 30 and 31, 2024. 

For example, in line with the growing demand for berberine in the marketplace, Funtrition, in collaboration with NNB Nutrition, will be showcasing dihydroberberine gummies at the SupplySide West Tasting bar. These gummies contain NNB's GlucoVantage to support healthy blood sugar. According to the press release, this ingredient offers up to five times the effectiveness of standard berberine.

Additionally, Funtrition will be showcasing its robust portfolio of gummy solutions, including: GummyGels (Gelatin Gummies), Pec-G (Pectin Gummies), Agar-G (Agar Gummies), and GummieX (Mixed-matrix Heat-Resistant Gummies). Brand new to its portfolio are Air-G (Aeriated Gummies that allow for a better mineral incorporation) and Layer-G (Two-layered Gummies designed to combine ingredients that normally couldn’t be combined).

The two companies have been expanding their operations and technology to meet the needs of the global nutraceutical industry.

Funtrition and Sofgen to showcase innovative gummy and softgel solutions at SupplySide West 2024 

You may have heard of the low-FODMAP diet as it relates to people with gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These are short-chain carbohydrates (ie. sugars) that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and can cause digestive distress, including symptoms such as cramping, diarrhea, bloating, constipation, and gas.

High-FODMAP foods include dairy, wheat, beans and lentils, some vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, onions, and garlic, as well as some fruits such as apples, cherries, pears, and peaches. The idea of the low-FODMAP diet is to eliminate high-FODMAP foods from one’s diet for a period of two to six weeks to allow symptoms to go down and reduce small intestine bacterial overgrowth, if you have it.

 However, some of these foods should be slowly reintroduced to identify which ones trigger symptoms and which ones do not. This allows people to avoid the foods that cause gastrointestinal symptoms while continuing to eat foods that do not. Ideally, this process should be done under the supervision of a medical professional.

The reason that a low-FODMAP diet should be a process of temporarily elimination followed by reintroduction of high-FODMAP foods is because: 1) It would be a highly restrictive diet overwise, and 2) Fermentable carbohydrates feed bacteria in the gut, and eliminating them entirely may have a negative impact on the composition of one’s gut microbiome.

 For example, research does indicate that the elimination of high-FODMAP foods could lead to reduction in 

, which is well-recognized as a health-promoting gut bacteria. More research is necessary to understand the impacts a low-FODMAP diet has on the gut microbiome, but it is broadly accepted that it is effective for alleviating negative symptoms and improving quality of life for people with IBD or IBS. One review indicates that reduced FODMAP intakes do not impact bacterial diversity, but rather total bacterial abundance, and promotes a balanced approach to reduce negative gastrointestinal symptoms while also maintaining a healthy microbiome.

 This is often referred to as a “FODMAP-gentle” approach.

Products marketed and certified as low-FODMAP offer certain consumers peace of mind when they’re shopping for finished products. While they know what FODMAP ingredients they can or cannot eat, checking the labels of all food packaging is profoundly tedious. Certified products allow consumers to more safely shop for finished products while otherwise controlling what high-FODMAP foods they can include in their diet. There are currently two low-FODMAP certifications. One is theMonash University Low FODMAP Certified badge and the other is the FODMAP Friendly logo, both of which also have an app to help consumers find certified products.

People who suffer from IBS may benefit from other interventions besides a low-FODMAP diet alone and should consult a physician before pursuing one, but brands who want to capture a growing base of consumers may benefit from producing and certifying low-FODMAP products. For example, it’s estimated that IBS impacts up to 15% of the U.S. population, and affects women twice as often as men.

 However, because not everyone seeks medical care, up to 75% of cases may go undiagnosed.

 As more consumers seek help for their gastrointestinal symptoms, low-FODMAP foods may offer a measure of relief as well as answers to their digestive health issues.

Understanding FODMAPs and how low-FODMAP diets are implemented.

What is a low-FODMAP diet?

According to a recent press release (1), Health Canada recognized a functional claim authorization for SynbÆctive Femme (Femme), which is a “patented probiotic combination featuring 

 BL050, specifically focused on women’s urogenital health.”

The press release discusses the importance of urogenital health and how it can aid in the prevention of infections for example, bacterial vaginosis. It is estimated that about 30% of women experience this condition (1). By focusing on urogenital health, these measures can help lower the risk of various chronic conditions, benefit long-term health, and aid in overall wellbeing (1).

The Femme formulation has undergone three clinical studies that highlighted it’s women’s health benefits. Mentioned in the first study, the research showed that the strains in Femme had succeeded in colonization, migrated from the intestinal tract, and prevailed in the vaginal environment (1). An additional study disclosed how Femme’s probiotic formulation lowered the risk of occurrence for bacterial vaginosis, as well as encouraged “healthy vaginal microbiota” (1). More research showed that after 28 days (1), menopausal women experienced robust anti-inflammatory properties, improved vaginal health, and a rise in lactobacilli.
