There has been a dramatic surge in demand from companies seeking certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), according to UK-based certification body BM Trada.
The company’s sales manager, Andy Green, says this surge reflects increasing international concern about the environmental effects of palm oil production. “We anticipate that the trend towards certification will continue to gather momentum worldwide,” he adds.
According to BM Trada, palm oil represents approximately 30% of all vegetable oil production around the world. It can be found in one in 10 supermarket products, including food and toiletries.
The company says it became the first independent body to gain approval to carry out third-party RSPO certifications in March of last year, and that it is still the only UK body with RSPO approval.
