Johanna Maukonen, D.Sc.
Director of Global Clinical Innovation and Translation
IFF

Dr. Johanna Maukonen is Director of Global Clinical Innovation & Translation at IFF. She focuses on developing scientifically sound translation of customer and market needs to R&D strategy and projects, being a key link for Health R&D to customers and external scientific communities. Between 2017 and 2022 she led the Global Health and Nutrition Science group, which had over 40 scientists and technicians, and conducted and coordinated in vitro, pre-clinical and clinical studies on IFF’s ingredients, mainly in relation to probiotic research. Before joining IFF, Johanna spent over 20 years at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the Nordic’s leading research and technology company. She has extensive R&D experience in understanding the gut microbiota and its impact on health, especially on the influence of probiotics, nutrition and fibers. She has DSc(Tech) on characterization of predominant human fecal microbiota.

Rebecca Tarrien holds dual B.S. degrees in Biology and Molecular Biology & Microbiology, graduating with Honors from the University of Central Florida. She served as a Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Michigan for two years and has four years of research experience studying microbial pathogens between her time at the University of Central Florida and the University of Michigan. Rebecca has over 11 years of regulatory and scientific experience in the dietary supplement, and nutrition industry. Her expertise includes extensive work with live microbial ingredients in product development and formulation, labeling and regulatory compliance, marketing and claim substantiation, and GRAS and NDIN dossiers.
