Plant protein ingredient supplier Apparo Inc. (Eden Prairie, MN) says that its Solistein sunflower protein isolates are now Upcycled Certified by the Upcycled Food Association. The protein ingredients can be used in plant-based milks, ice cream, yogurt, beverages, bakery, cereal, nutrition bar, and more.

Apparo produces Solistein sunflower protein isolates using its patent-pending Total Crop Utilization technology that enables the firm to process sunflower oil while recovering additional nutrients for human applications. According to the firm, its goal “is to increase human nutritional use of the seed meal from sunflower oil production from near zero to over 80%.”

The Solistein line includes Solistein 001 Sunflower Native Protein Isolate and Solistein 002 Sunflower Protein Isolate. “Both of our Solistein proteins are over 90% protein,” said Apparo’s CEO Ian Mackay in a press release. “The Solistein 001 has a sweet taste, and Solistein 002 has a neutral flavor. These options are true game changers that we believe will take plant-based products to the next level in terms of flavor opportunities.”

Apparo says it will begin commercial production of Solistein proteins in the third quarter of 2023.
