Frutarom Health Ltd. (Londerzeel, Belgium) will debut a new performance ingredient at SupplySide West called Activeberry, which is derived from blackcurrant berry, a source of anthocyanins and antioxidants. The company says research indicates that blackcurrant can increase blood flow and antioxidant status, and improve aerobic performance-all boons to athletes and active-lifestyle consumers.
“With the launch of Activeberry, Frutarom Health strengthens its position in the sport nutrition market, adding to its already substantial portfolio of active, natural ingredients,” said Itay Shafat, PhD, product manager, Frutarom Health. The ingredient is suited to dietary supplements, sports drinks, and nutrition bars.
The company claims to have a unique way of producing Activeberry that works without solvents or other chemicals and that “maintains the properties of the natural berry.” According to the company, a recent comparison study “tested the vasodilation efficacy of blackcurrant produced by this unique technology compared to the more common ethanol extraction method.” The company says the study found Activeberry to be “superior” to the ethanol-extract product.
