Botanical extracts supplier Arjuna Natural Extracts (Kerala, India) announced that it has received a patent from the European Patent Office for its high-potency turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract ingredient, BCM-95. Arjuna says that the new European patent (EP2555787) is for “composition for use in treatment.” Specifically, the patent covers BCM-95’s composition of active curcuminoids demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and Ar-turmerone.

BCM-95 is a unique composition of curcumin and essential oil of turmeric that the company says increases curcumin’s bioavailability and provides a range of health benefits associated with turmeric. In a press release from the company, it stated that the essential oil of turmeric has been shown to be effective in helping to reduce symptoms of depression, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease. BCM-95 has been studied in 42 published and more than a dozen ongoing studies, including pre-clinical and clinical studies, for its bioavailability and its potential health applications, the company added.

In addition to the new European patent, BCM-95 has also been granted 13 U.S. patents, two Japanese patents, and one other European patent, Arjuna says. Last year, BCM-95 was granted Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the U.S. for a dose of up to 1000 mg BCM-95 per person per day in medical foods.

Benny Antony, PhD, joint managing director, Arjuna, said in the press release that the new European patent is a key step towards building BCM-95’s position in the European market. “This highly bioavailable curcumin is already a leading brand in the U.S., marketed by Dolcas Biotech-so much so [that] Arjuna installed a fully solar-powered continuous extraction plant, and tripled its manufacturing capacity in Coimbatore, India, to meet this growing demand.”

He added: “We are continually investing in new technologies to answer the constantly expanding needs of our customers, while developing a growing portfolio of natural health supplements, all made more secure by diligently securing our intellectual property.”
