The herbal blend was able to improve functional activity, bending flexibility, pain, and sleep quality.
A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group study1 investigated the effects of a proprietary blend of Vitex negundo leaves and Zingiber officinale rhizome on lower back pain. Seventy-two subjects between the ages of 18 and 60 with lower back pain were randomized to receive either a placebo or a 200 mg capsule of the proprietary blend, twice daily for 30 days. The blend is marketed as Muvz by ENovate Biolife (Wilmington, DE).
The primary outcome of the study was changes in functional activity, and secondary outcomes included changes in bending flexibility, pain intensity, work productivity, and sleep quality. Results showed that functional activity, based on the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQ), saw a statistically significant reduction in the experimental group compared to baseline on both day 7 and day 30. The placebo group saw a significant reduction at day 30 but compared to the placebo group, the experimental group saw a nearly five times magnitude of change on day 7, which then doubled on day 30.
Subjects taking the proprietary blend also saw a significant improvement in bending flexibility and while both groups did see a statistically significant reduction in lower back pain intensity (based on Visual Analogue Scale; VAS) by day 7, the magnitude of reduction was three times greater than the placebo group. This difference was statistically significant. At 30 days, the improvement in VAS scores in the experimental group went from 16.23% to 41.8%, twice the improvement of the placebo group. The experimental group also saw significant reductions in work impairment and significant improvements in sleep quality. In the study, both groups saw improvements in sleep quality, but again the researchers noted that the magnitude of change for the experimental group was significantly higher compared to placebo, and the difference was statistically significant.
“Muvz is a revolutionary product that has been proven to ease life and improve work productivity in people going through stubborn low back discomfort,” said Shalini Srivastava, MD, director of clinical development for ENovate Biolife.
