A recent study1 investigating a proprietary Bacopa monnieri extract (BME) found positive impacts on memory and cognitive health. In the study, 80 healthy subjects were randomized to receive either 300 mg of BME containing 90 mg of total bacosides or placebo every morning after breakfast for 12 weeks. The extract is manufactured by Samriddh Nutractive Pvt. Ltd. and sold as B-Lit Bacopa. Researchers measured memory at baseline and cognitive health by using the Creyos battery of tests, anxiety and sleep quality using the Beck Anxiety Inventory and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, as well as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and cortisol levels via serum samples.

Results showed that subjects taking BME saw significant improvements in memory (verbal short-term memory, spatial short-term memory, working memory, visuospatial working memory, and episodic memory) and cognition (concentration, alertness, reasoning, and mental flexibility) compared to placebo from baseline to Day 84. Improvements in cognition were seen in the BME groups as early as Day 14 and Day 28 for memory. Researchers also observed a significant acute effect on concentration within three hours after a single dose of BME. Anxiety and depression scores were significantly improved in the BME group throughout the study, compared to placebo, with significant reductions in serum cortisol and significant increases in BDNF.

“This is the most comprehensive single study done on Bacopa and the result of our study demonstrates the potential of Bacopa extract as a safe and effective ingredient to support memory, cognition, stress, and sleep quality in healthy adults,” said Aditya Jain, founder and CEO of Samriddh, in a press release. “These findings alongside with our technology for enhanced bioavailability and absorption signify a step forward in innovation and research for cognitive health and overall well-being.”
