It is the only temperate plant within the Annonaceae family of plants which includes many tropical fruits such as cherimoya, which is native to Ecuador and Peru. Pawpaw trees grow naturally in 26 states throughout the Eastern U.S., and in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.
