Humanitarian organizations Sight and Live and Vitamin Angels are teaming up to provide vitamin A to children in India deficient in the nutrient.
According to the groups, 37% of the 535 million children (ages 6 months to 5 years) suffering from moderate to severe vitamin A deficiency reside in India: “While the government of India fully supports initiatives for vitamin A supplementation and a large proportion of infants, children, and lactating women receive supplementation, there remains a significant portion of the population that have yet to be reached.”
Vitamin A deficiency is linked to xerophthalmia, an eye disorder that can lead to permanent blindness in children. It can also result in a reduced ability to resist infections that can result in mortality.
