The company's longstanding program is already compliant with FDA's new rule.
Following FDA’s recent announcement of an official U.S. definition for “gluten-free” products, NSF International (Ann Arbor, MI) says that its gluten-free certification program already meets these new standards.
Developed in 2011, the NSF program includes product testing and audits of manufacturing facilities. Just like the FDA’s definition, NSF sets a gluten limit of 20 parts per million in any product that is to be labeled as “gluten-free,” “without gluten,” “free of gluten,” or “no gluten.”
Manufacturers have until August 5, 2014 to bring into compliance all products with such labeling.
